Lightspan ETFE North America – Advanced ETFE Roof and Facade Solutions in the USA and Canada
Lightspan ETFE, a brand of VF Lightspan GmbH headquartered in Bremen, Germany, continues to expand its global presence with dedicated activities across North America. Through collaborations with engineering partners, construction companies, and international facade specialists, Lightspan ETFE delivers innovative ETFE roof systems, ETFE facade structures, skylight solutions, and lightweight architectural membranes for projects throughout the United States and Canada.
As global demand for lightweight roof technology grows, North America has become one of the most important regions for modern ETFE construction. Architects, developers, and engineering firms increasingly choose ETFE as a replacement for heavy glass roofs and traditional plastic skylights. Lightspan ETFE provides safe, sustainable, and visually striking solutions designed specifically for large architectural spans and modern building envelopes.
ETFE Technology for the North American Market
ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) membrane systems are among the most advanced materials used in contemporary architecture. Compared with traditional glass roofs or polycarbonate skylights, ETFE offers significant advantages including reduced structural weight, increased daylight transmission, long-term durability, and improved design flexibility.
Lightspan ETFE systems are engineered to reduce steel requirements while enabling large transparent roof spans, curved roof forms, and lightweight facade structures. These characteristics make ETFE the preferred solution for stadiums, airports, atriums, exhibition centers, shopping malls, industrial halls, and public infrastructure projects across North America.
Partnerships and Collaboration in the United States
In the United States, Lightspan ETFE collaborates with international construction specialists and facade engineering teams to deliver complete ETFE system solutions. Cooperation with industry partners including Bemo USA allows Lightspan to support projects requiring advanced roof engineering, membrane technology, and lightweight structural systems.
These collaborations combine European ETFE engineering expertise with North American construction capabilities. The result is highly efficient ETFE roofing and facade systems that meet the structural, environmental, and safety standards required for large-scale construction projects in the United States and Canada.
Applications of ETFE Systems in North America
Lightspan ETFE technology is used in a wide range of building types across North America. The versatility of ETFE membrane structures allows architects to create transparent, lightweight, and energy-efficient building envelopes.
Typical applications include:
• stadium roofs and sports arenas
• airport terminals and transportation hubs
• exhibition and convention centers
• commercial shopping complexes
• hotel atriums and skylight systems
• industrial production facilities
• architectural facade structures
In each of these applications, ETFE offers superior performance compared to glass roofs, traditional plastic roofing materials, and heavy steel-supported structures.
ETFE Skylights and Transparent Roof Systems
One of the most common uses of ETFE technology in North America is large skylight and atrium roof systems. ETFE membranes allow natural daylight to enter interior spaces while maintaining structural safety and thermal performance.
Round skylights, curved roof structures, and large-span transparent ceilings can all be designed using ETFE cushions or single-layer membrane systems. These lightweight roof structures require significantly less steel than conventional glass roofs, reducing both construction costs and environmental impact.
Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Architecture
Sustainability is becoming an essential requirement for modern architecture in North America. ETFE technology supports sustainable design by improving natural daylight usage, reducing structural materials, and lowering long-term maintenance requirements.
ETFE membranes are extremely durable and resistant to weather, UV radiation, and environmental pollution. Their smooth surface also provides self-cleaning properties, reducing maintenance needs for large roof structures.
Because ETFE structures are significantly lighter than glass roofs, they allow architects and engineers to design buildings with reduced material consumption and improved structural efficiency.
Roof Modernization and Glass Replacement
In addition to new construction projects, Lightspan ETFE also supports roof modernization and renovation projects across North America. Many older buildings originally constructed with glass roofs or polycarbonate panels are now being upgraded using ETFE membrane technology.
Replacing heavy glass structures with lightweight ETFE systems allows building owners to improve safety, energy performance, and architectural design while extending the lifespan of existing buildings.
Engineering Expertise from Bremen to North America
Lightspan ETFE combines engineering expertise developed in Bremen, Germany with international construction knowledge to support projects worldwide. The company builds upon decades of experience in membrane architecture, industrial construction, and facade engineering.
Through global collaboration with architects, structural engineers, and facade specialists, Lightspan ETFE continues to deliver innovative solutions for complex roof and facade structures across North America.
Future Growth in the North American Market
The North American construction market continues to adopt ETFE technology at an increasing rate. Major architectural projects across the United States and Canada demonstrate the growing importance of lightweight membrane structures in modern building design.
Lightspan ETFE remains committed to supporting this growth by providing high-performance ETFE roof systems, facade structures, skylight technology, and engineering solutions tailored to the needs of architects and developers across North America.

The Texlon® System
Texlon roof system, Use of ETFE, ETFE roof construction, architecture, cushion thickness, cushion size, cushion span, The Texlon® system consists mainly of two components: ETFE foil and aluminum profiles. The ETFE foil can be used as a single-layer or multi-layer system. If it is used as a multi-layer (two to five layers) system, it is welded to so-called cushions and filled with air. A keder is welded around the perimeter of the cushions. Both the single-layer ETFE system and the ETFE cushions are mounted in the aluminum profiles, with the help of the keder. The aluminum profiles themselves are attached to the building structure. The structure can, for example, be made of steel, wood or even cable.
