ETFE Canopies at The Beach Dubai

What is an ETFE canopy? ETFE canopies are lightweight architectural roof structures made from ETFE foil, used to provide weather protection while allowing natural daylight into the space below. At The Beach JBR in Dubai, an ETFE roof creates an enclosed, temperature-controlled dining environment while maintaining a strong visual connection to the beachfront. The Pavilion was completed in 2022 and forms part of the wider waterfront development at Jumeirah Beach Residence.

ETFE Canopies – What are they used for?

ETFE roof structures for beachfront architecture

ETFE canopies are particularly suitable for large public spaces where low structural weight, daylight transmission and weather protection are important. Unlike conventional glass roofs, ETFE foil requires significantly less supporting structure. At The Beach, the transparent roofing system helps create a sheltered environment without losing the open character of the waterfront location.

Transparent membrane roofing for Dubai

Dubai’s climate places specific demands on outdoor and semi-enclosed architecture. ETFE canopies can combine solar control, natural light and weather protection in a lightweight envelope. The Pavilion at The Beach uses an ETFE roofing system to support year-round use of the dining area.

ETFE Canopies – How does the system work?

ETFE cushion systems and lightweight roofing

The roof is formed from ETFE cushions supported by a steel structure. The cushions create lightweight, transparent roof panels while the supporting frame transfers the loads into the surrounding structure. At The Beach, the roof spans approximately 25 metres and is supported by inclined steel arches and a perimeter girder structure.

ETFE foil roofs and natural daylight

ETFE foil allows high levels of daylight transmission while reducing the weight associated with conventional glazed roofing. This makes ETFE suitable for large-span canopies, atriums, courtyards and public spaces.

ETFE Canopies – What was built at The Beach?

Pavilion at The Beach, Dubai

The Pavilion accommodates six licensed restaurants within an enclosed, temperature-controlled environment, with outdoor terraces overlooking the coast towards Bluewaters. BSBG +studio designed the Pavilion, while BSBG also acted as Architect of Record, Lead Consultant and Structural Engineer.

ETFE Canopies for year-round use

The project demonstrates how ETFE can connect an enclosed architectural space with its surrounding beachfront environment. The transparent roof brings daylight into the dining area while providing protection from the external climate.

Project: Pavilion at The Beach
Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Year: 2022
Architect: BSBG +studio
ETFE area: 1,800 m² / approx. 19,375 ft²
Application: ETFE canopy / roof system
Sector: Hospitality & Leisure

Pavilion at The Beach in Dubai is a 2022 ETFE canopy project designed by BSBG +studio. The approximately 1,800 m² ETFE roof uses lightweight transparent ETFE cushions supported by a steel structure to create a protected, temperature-controlled dining environment while maintaining natural daylight and a connection to the beachfront.
