ETFE Cable Roof at 41 Burda Shopping Center in Kocaeli
What is a ETFE cable roof? An ETFE cable roof is a lightweight roofing system that combines ETFE foil cushions with a steel and cable support structure. It allows large spans, high levels of daylight transmission, and weather protection while reducing structural weight compared to conventional roofing materials.
The 41 Burda Shopping Center in Kocaeli, Turkey, demonstrates how an ETFE cable roof can support both architectural design and visitor comfort. Completed in 2015 and opened in early 2016, the shopping center consists of three main zones connected by a continuous two-level mall. For this project, a Texlon® ETFE canopy was designed, engineered, and installed to create a bright and welcoming environment.
How does an ETFE cable roof improve shopping mall architecture?
A successful retail environment depends on natural light, comfortable spaces, and visual appeal. The transparent ETFE canopy allows daylight to enter the mall while protecting visitors from rain and other weather conditions. Illuminated water features beneath the roof create focal points that enhance the visitor experience throughout the day and evening.
ETFE cushion roof systems for large-span structures
ETFE cushion technology makes it possible to cover extensive areas without the weight of traditional glass roofing. This helps architects create open spaces while maintaining structural efficiency.
Lightweight membrane roofing and daylight performance
Compared with conventional roof systems, ETFE membranes provide excellent light transmission, helping reduce dependence on artificial lighting during daytime hours.
Is an ETFE cable roof suitable for commercial buildings?
Yes. ETFE cable roofs are widely used for shopping centers, stadiums, transportation hubs, and public spaces where natural light and large open areas are important.
Why was an ETFE cable roof chosen for the Kocaeli project?
The design draws inspiration from the natural surroundings of Kocaeli and the nearby Marmara Sea. A 9,000 m² Texlon® ETFE canopy was installed above the mall, creating an outdoor atmosphere while offering protection from environmental conditions.
Transparent roofing structures inspired by nature
The roof design reflects flowing forms found in the surrounding landscape, connecting the interior and exterior architecture.
Steel-supported ETFE roof engineering
In addition to the ETFE cushions, the complete steel support structure was engineered and installed to accommodate the unique geometry of the roof.
What makes this ETFE cable roof unique?
The roof consists of ETFE cushions in different shapes and sizes, specifically developed to match the fluid architectural concept of the shopping center.
Custom ETFE canopy design for complex geometry
Each cushion was manufactured to fit the roof’s distinctive form, demonstrating the flexibility of ETFE construction systems.
How does an ETFE cable roof contribute to building certification?
The project received a LEED Gold certification, recognizing its resource-efficient design and environmental performance.
